Shannon Berliner is a mother and wife.  Unfortunately, she is also a breast cancer patient. She was diagnosed with breast cancer over this past holiday season and is now undergoing treatment.  In this episode of the Discussing Healthcare podcast she shares her experiences related to her breast cancer.

Shannon is one of over 230,000 women that are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in the U.S.  It is the most common cancer (after skin cancer) in women.  Fortunately, the diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer has improved which has improved the survival rates over the past 25 years.  Currently, there are 2.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.

    Hi Shannon,

I heard your interview and wanted to let you know that I know exactly what you’re going through. I was diagnosed with breast cancer Sept 2013, my sister died of breast cancer in 1996 at age 36, my mom died of breast cancer last year, my only remaining sibling also was diagnosed with breast cancer 2 weeks prior to my diagnosis. I guess I’m not a stranger to breast cancer. Unfortunately every female in my immediate family has or had died from breast cancer.

I now know so much more about this disease than I ever had before. I’d love to get in touch with you as all of us breast cancer survivors need to share as much as we know with each other! Dr. Lewis please feel free to provide Shannon my contact information. Thank you!
